Modelling a Doughnut

My focus these past years has been mainly focused on the 2D side of Illustration and design and less on 3D. However, this past year I decided to enrol on the 3rd year of computer animation arts. One of my class challenges was to incorporate what we learned and model, texture and light a dounught using Maya and the Arnold renderer.

Below is my final result. I used Mudbox to model/sculpt the outer shell of the doughnut and rendered it within Maya. I used several different textures, all using the AIstandardshader in Arnold. For the inner surface, I took a bread image and used photoshops 3D feature to export the relevant maps, including Normals, displacement, height etc.

For a first shot, im mostly happy with the result; however, I realise there is still much to learn and improve on. One of these is the colour/ texture externally of the doughnut. Another is lighting, which could have been presented more interesting. Maybe I will have another crack at it next year!
